I. The Best CBD Oils of 2020

II. How We Chose the Best CBD Oil Companies

Since hemp was deregulated in 2018, hundreds of CBD oil and related products have hit the market. However, so far, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved one, Epidiolex, which treats some seizures.

A lack of FDA approval doesn’t mean that CBD products are inherently unsafe, but can result in false claims, harmful ingredients, and unintended side effects. Therefore, when selecting our picks for the best CBD oils, we considered each brand’s reputation, processes, history, and customer reviews, as well as the pros and cons of the products themselves. Our goal was to find the most credible and trustworthy CBD companies currently on the market.

Research HoursCompanies ConsideredCompanies SelectedExperts Consulted

Availability

To ensure that all of our readers have access to all the listed products, we only ranked CBD oils that can be purchased online, and shipped throughout the U.S. Because the sale of CBD, like marijuana, is regulated at the state level, CBD oils are only available for purchase in stores in certain states.

Testing & Results

Companies are not currently required by law to have their products tested for ingredients and safety. However, reputable companies have their products evaluated by an independent third-party testing site, as an extra reassurance to consumers that their products include what it says it does. As we want to recommend the safest, most effective CBD oils, this list only includes CBD oil companies that were independently tested by a third party, and who made their testing results accessible to the public.

Truthful Advertising

With the industry so unregulated, untruthful advertising claims for CBD oils are fairly common. We sought companies that were balanced and accurate in their advertising about the benefits of their products.

IV. CBD Oil Basics

CBD Oil Ingredients

CBD oil is usually composed of three things: CBD-rich hemp extract, a liquid base or “carrier” (this dilutes the extract so it’s not too strong), and sometimes flavor-enhancing additives. When CBD extract is added to the liquid carrier, it’s referred to as a CBD oil or CBD tincture.

Types of CBD Extract

  • Full spectrum: This is the least processed form of hemp extract. It’s rich in CBD but also contains small amounts of THC, CBG, and many other naturally occurring hemp compounds called phytocannabinoids, or cannabinoids. Many individuals believe CBD is most effective when taken with the “full spectrum” or “entourage” of cannabinoids. The exact level of each cannabinoid depends on the genetic strain of the crop.
  • Broad spectrum: Broad spectrum is full spectrum extract that has gone through additional processing steps to remove just the psychoactive THC*. All other cannabinoids remain, allowing the remaining compounds to work together in what is often called a “synergistic” way.
  • Isolate: Isolate is CBD that has been completely* separated from all other cannabinoids naturally found in the hemp plant. This is the purest, most processed form of CBD available. Sometimes it’s sold in a powder or as crystals, but it can be found as a tincture as well.

*Note: Many companies claim that their broad spectrum or isolate CBD contains no THC, though it’s likely that a trace amount of the plant’s original THC remains. That said, the oil was created from a hemp strain that contained only 0.3% or less of THC to start, so the remaining amount is relatively negligible.

CBD Extraction Methods

  • Solvent extraction: Most of the time, CBD extracts are pulled from plant matter using a solvent. Common solvents include CO2, food-grade alcohols like ethanol, or hydrocarbons like petroleum, butane, or propane. Generally, little of the solvent remains in the product after extraction, but the use of hydrocarbons is concerning to some consumers.
  • Mechanical extraction: A full spectrum CBD product called rosin can be made using heat and/or pressure. This is a relatively simple method, and it adds no solvents to the product, making it truly natural. However, rosins are difficult to find — most large brands don’t make them.

Carriers for CBD Oil

Regardless of the extract type and extraction method, a carrier oil is almost always used with the extract. Some companies even offer multiple types of carrier oils for the convenience of their customers. Common carriers include:

  • Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, also known as fractionated coconut oil
  • Hemp seed oil (hemp seeds do not contain cannabinoids)
  • Avocado oil
  • Olive oil
  • Vegetable glycerin

CBD Oil Additives

A company may choose to enhance the flavor of CBD oil with a variety of natural or artificial substances. Each company’s flavoring choices differ, and some choose to not sell any flavored oils. Some common additives include:

  • Plant extracts like vanilla, mint, or various edible essential oils
  • Spices like turmeric or cinnamon
  • Sweeteners like stevia, cane sugar, or honey
  • Fruit juice concentrates
  • Vitamin E
  • Sunflower oil in small amounts
  • “Natural ingredients” (you may want to ask about these if you have allergies or food sensitivities)

How to Use CBD Oil

Sublingual transmission (a fancy way of saying under your tongue) is the most common consumption method for CBD oils. It’s a very effective method that puts CBD directly into your bloodstream.

To take CBD oil, shake the bottle to make sure all the ingredients are mixed. Use a dropper (most CBD oils come with one) to draw the proper dosage of the oil, then place the oil under your tongue. Make sure the dropper tip doesn’t touch anywhere in your mouth to avoid bacterial contamination that can compromise the quality of the oil. Hold or swish the oil in your mouth for at least a minute before swallowing.

When taking CBD oil orally, the effects can be felt for up to five hours, depending on the dosage, your individual body chemistry, and how recently you have eaten.

CBD oil dosages are not standardized, so finding the appropriate dosage might take some trial and error. Follow the dosage instructions provided by the company, start with the lowest possible dose, and increase it if necessary. Although you can take CBD oil at any time of day, you should only take a dose every four to six hours.

You can also add CBD oil to food and beverages, although this can affect how much of the oil you absorb, how well you absorb it, and how long the effects last.

CBD Facts & Fictions

There is a lot of misinformation about CBD. We’ve debunked several of the most common CBD myths as well as provide a breakdown of what’s true about CBD.

Common CBD Myths

  • CBD will make you high. THC, not CBD, is what produces a high. Any CBD product derived from hemp is legally required to contain 0.3% THC or less. If the product contains more THC than that amount, it’s considered a marijuana product and falls under stricter regulations.
  • CBD is 100% risk-free. CBD is generally considered low risk, but it’s not “risk-free.” Before taking a CBD product, you need to consult your doctor to ensure that CBD won’t interfere with your other medications or be harmful to your liver, two possible side effects found by the FDA in a recent CBD drug trial.
  • CBD is universally effective. It’s dangerous to assume that CBD has unlimited therapeutic powers. In fact, the use of CBD products for some conditions, especially life-threatening ones, is still quite controversial. Any use of CBD should be discussed with a knowledgeable physician, and you should be skeptical of basing major health choices on results from animal studies or studies that weren’t double-blind, placebo-controlled, and overseen by the FDA or other regulatory agencies.

The Truth About CBD

  • The benefits of CBD in reducing limited forms of childhood seizures have been proven in a rigorous FDA prescription drug study of Epidiolex, a new prescription drug. Beyond that study, the benefits of CBD are unclear but researchers are optimistic about the data that future studies may reveal about the benefits of CBD. To date, the potential of using CBD to treat anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and a number of other conditions are being studied.
  • The FDA has not given CBD or hemp its Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status meaning anything on the market is technically, not FDA-approved. The agency maintains that CBD oil cannot be sold as a dietary supplement, although it often is, and notes that liver damage, medication interactions, sleep problems, and gastrointestinal issues are possible with CBD use.
  • Federal and state government agencies have allowed the legal growth and sale of hemp in many areas, but it’s important to understand the specific laws in your state.
  • According to a Consumer Reports study, over a quarter of Americans have tried a CBD product for a variety of reasons, including joint pain, anxiety and stress relief, sleep, among others, with varying levels of success. Those in their 20’s are most likely to try CBD, but its use is becoming increasingly common among all adult age groups.

V. Buyer’s Guide to CBD Oils

Step 1: Talk to your doctor

Despite some advertising claims, CBD may have some side effects and isn’t right for everyone. The decision to use it should always be made in consultation with a physician who knows your health history. CBD can interfere with the effectiveness of some medications, so be sure to discuss possible interactions with your physician as well as a pharmacist.

CBD shouldn’t be casually used to replace pharmaceutical, surgical, or otherwise medical lifesaving treatments. Evidence for CBD’s effectiveness for treating life-threatening diseases is limited at best and disproved at worst, depending on the disease or condition. Stopping or avoiding other treatments that are known to be effective because you believe CBD is more “natural” can place you in serious danger.

Step 2: Choose between isolate, broad spectrum, and full spectrum oil

Full spectrum CBD oil (also called “whole-plant” CBD) contains a wide variety of cannabinoids, which are naturally occurring chemicals in the hemp plant. Individuals who favor full-spectrum CBD say that cannabinoids have their maximum therapeutic effect when they’re used together as they naturally occur. The way that cannabinoids enhance each other’s effects, however, is not fully understood, so claims about this “entourage effect” or “synergistic” quality are often vague.

Broad spectrum CBD oil contains all cannabinoids except for THC, the psychoactive element of cannabis. Conversely, a CBD isolate is supposed to contain only CBD. While CBD isolate may lack the entourage effect found with full spectrum oils, it appeals to consumers who are required to take drug tests or who are especially concerned about avoiding a high.

Regardless of type, no CBD oil derived from hemp is legally allowed to contain more than 0.3% THC.

Step 3: Understand CBD concentrations and dosages

Companies list the concentration of CBD in each bottle in milligrams (mg). Bottles typically range between 250 mg to 5,000 mg of CBD. Most bottles are 30 mL (1 oz.), though you’ll occasionally find larger or smaller sizes. To compare the dosage concentration across different brands or sizes, it’s best to compare the CBD mg per 1 mL of liquid. Some companies provide this in the product description, but in many cases, you’ll need to calculate this number for yourself.

Recommended dosages for CBD products are not currently standardized. Generally, companies suggest starting with a very low dose and increasing it gradually until the desired effect is reached.

Step 4: Decide on flavors and additives

At its most basic level, CBD oil includes CBD extract from hemp that is mixed into a mild or flavorless oil. If the hemp extract is full spectrum or broad spectrum, it will probably have an earthy taste that may be bitter. If you dislike this strong natural flavor, you may want to consider flavored CBD oil to make your dose more palatable.

Some additives, like turmeric, may be added to boost health benefits, but most are purely for flavor. Some CBD oils list terpenes on the label, which are aromatic oils that occur naturally in hemp and enhance flavor and taste.

Common Flavors & Additives

  • Mint
  • Chocolate
  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla
  • Tropical
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberry
  • Stevia or other sweeteners

Step 5: Compare multiple brands and oils

Depending on the state in which you live, your doctor may direct you to a dispensary or suggest a CBD oil that you buy online. If your doctor doesn’t have a brand recommendation, below are some tips to help you sort through the options.

  • Read lab reports. Reputable companies offer third-party lab reports also called a certificate of authenticity on the chemical content of their CBD products. It’s best if the report includes the level of cannabinoids, as well as testing for heavy metals and pesticides. If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a lab report, you may wish to look into the lab’s reputation online or call the lab for more information. If anything seems unusual or untrustworthy, consider looking elsewhere, as it’s important that you are confident in the methods with which CBD is produced and tested.
  • Compare similar products. If you compare oils of two different concentrations, you’re going to have an inaccurate look at the true cost of each product. Compare products that have the same mg of CBD per ml, and take into account differences in bottle size and carrier oil as well. In general, a lower concentration equates to a lower price, since bottles with a low concentration include more of the inexpensive carrier oils. It’s common to spend at least $100 for a 30 ml bottle of CBD oil.
  • Find ways to save. It’s common for CBD oil companies to offer discounts. If you’re a veteran, receive disability benefits, or have a limited income, for example, you may wish to ask about qualifying for a reduced price. Even if you don’t fall into any of these categories, you may be able to save money by looking for promotional deals, especially during major holidays. Beware of “free trials” as some companies may include an auto-renewing subscription that may prove difficult to unsubscribe.

Step 6: Research relevant laws before you purchase

The U.S. seems to be leaving behind the era of cannabis prohibition, but changes are happening slowly, and new laws can be confusing. Below we list a few resources about how federal and state laws surrounding CBD may affect you.

  • The difference between marijuana and hemp. The 2018 Farm Bill made an important distinction between Cannabis Sativa plants that have high THC content and plants that have low THC content. According to the bill, plants with 0.3% THC or less are now called “industrial hemp,” while plants with higher than 0.3% THC are classified as marijuana and are Schedule I drugs. This bill made it possible to legally grow and sell hemp within the United States, within certain limits.
  • Your local laws. In addition to basic federal regulations regarding hemp farming and sales, local authorities may impose additional restrictions. In some states, it’s still illegal to grow hemp, according to the bipartisan, non-governmental National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). In addition to viewing state information provided by the NCSL, you may find it useful to visit your state government’s website and use its search feature to look for hemp and CBD laws that apply to you.
  • The risks of CBD and minors. If you’re considering giving CBD to your child, you should be aware that attempting to treat your child with CBD can open you up to serious legal trouble. Law enforcement, child welfare services, and regular citizens may be concerned about THC’s effect on your child, regardless of how low the THC content from hemp-derived CBD products is. However, the FDA has approved a CBD-based medication for two forms of childhood epilepsy, so if your concern for your child involves epilepsy, you may wish to speak with your or your child’s physician about this medication. You may also wish to research whether your child qualifies to participate in any legal, regulated CBD drug trials.

The above information is for self-education purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Consult with local legal experts if you have any concerns about buying or using CBD.

VI. Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBD oil safe?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), America’s main source of information on the safety of food, drugs, supplements, and more, takes a rather confusing stance on the safety of CBD. Thus far, it has allowed for the growth of hemp plants, and it allows the sale of many hemp products like oils and topicals, but it has not given CBD the status of Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). The FDA has only approved one CBD drug. If you visit the FDA website, you can read more about the possible side effects — like liver damage and medication interactions — that the FDA found in CBD use during the drug trial for Epidiolex. Consult a physician about the possible risks and benefits of CBD use before beginning a regime.

Will CBD oil make me fail a drug test?

Hemp-derived CBD oil can cause you to fail a drug test even though it does not have a high enough THC concentration to make you high. Broad spectrum or isolate versions of CBD oil may be less likely to make you fail, but there’s still a risk, especially if the company from which you purchased the oil doesn’t test its products thoroughly. If your employment, your probation status, your custody of your children, or any other part of your life relies on your ability to pass a drug test, then do not take CBD oil.

What is a CBD cumulative effect?

The phrase “cumulative effect” is the concept that repeated actions produce a different result than just one action. With CBD products, this may mean that consistent use will lead to a buildup of CBD within your body that leads to increased relief and/or worsening side effects than as-needed use yields. It may also mean that using multiple CBD products at the same time will amplify any positive or negative effects. Most companies and CBD users say that using CBD oil daily is better than using it every once in a while, but relatively little hard data is available about the cumulative effect or long-term results of CBD use.

What is a CBD entourage effect?

Many proponents of CBD say that using full spectrum CBD can unleash the “entourage effect” — a phenomenon of increased CBD effectiveness that occurs when all naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes work together. This largely theoretical concept has gained popular appeal and made full spectrum products popular, but researchers have yet to verify just how important the entourage effect truly is. It’s clear that CBD can be effective even without other cannabinoids, as is seen in the success of the prescription medication Epidiolex, which does not contain THC.

Can I take CBD in forms other than an oral tincture?

CBD oil that is taken sublingually (under the tongue) is often considered one of the most effective methods of absorption, but you may find that another method works better for you. Other CBD options include:

  • Capsules
  • Topicals like salves, lotions, massage oils, and sprays
  • Candy like lollipops, hard, and gummies
  • Makeup and skincare products
  • Bath bombs
  • Honeysticks
  • Toothpicks
  • Vape pens

It’s worth noting that the FDA currently does not consider CBD a food product and does not approve of it being sold in food or beverages.

Does all hemp-derived CBD have the same effect?

The lack of legal research options in the past century has led to a huge knowledge gap regarding the function of the different compounds within cannabis, including a lack of consensus on which strains of the hemp plant work best for which conditions. Each company breeds and cultivates its own crops, and what each company chooses to produce is based on its own studies and feedback. As a result, you could be purchasing CBD oils from different companies that have very different properties. For some consumers, finding a CBD tincture that is effective is a matter of trial and error.
